What they came with

Klean's customers arrive with a concern rather than a product name: acne, dryness, pigmentation, rough texture. The range they need routing into is not static either, with individual cleansers, toners, serums and sunscreens sold alongside fourteen bundles priced against the very items they contain, so a change to one cleanser ripples through every kit it appears in. On top of that sits a promotion calendar, a free-delivery threshold shoppers need to see their progress towards, and a stream of ingredient explainers that has to keep publishing. Keeping all of that consistent by hand, week after week, is the work that does not scale.

What the build had to do

Concern-led routing into the range

A Shop by Skin Concern block sends people into anti-acne, dry and sensitive, ageing and pigmentation, and textured-skin collections. The menu keeps the by-category route open for anyone who already knows they want a toner or a sunscreen, and both paths land on the same product records.

Bundles that stand as products

Fourteen duos, trios and kits each get a full product page with their own sizes, their own price against a compare-at figure, and a description that spells out what is inside. They sit in the same grids and carousels as the single products.

Product pages that answer the follow-ups

Each page carries a media gallery with video, a star rating and review count, size variants, and accordions for benefits, how to use, and the full INCI ingredient list. The questions a skincare buyer asks before adding to cart are on the page rather than in a DM.

A cart that shows the reward

The drawer tracks the subtotal against the free-delivery threshold and tells the shopper how far off they are, then switches to a completed state once they cross it. Two automatic upsells and a gift-with-purchase slot sit under the line items.

A promotion layer that switches on

A countdown announcement bar, scheduled product badges and quantity discount tiers can be turned on for a sale and off again without touching the theme. Order quantity limits guard stock during the busy runs.

An ingredient blog that keeps publishing

Six pages of posts on urea, clay masks, barrier damage and indoor sun exposure, each written against a question a customer actually types. The long-form brand copy sits at the foot of the home page, below the shopping, carrying the same terms.

Technical detail

Bundles modelled as their own SKUs

Each kit is a standalone Shopify product with its own variants and compare-at price rather than a cart-level discount rule, which keeps the bundle indexable, reviewable and linkable in its own right. The trade-off is that bundle stock is a separate inventory record from its components, so the two are reconciled deliberately rather than automatically.

Cart rewards render, checkout decides

The drawer recomputes the free-delivery ladder against the subtotal on every cart mutation and re-renders the progress bar, with a distinct state once the threshold is met. That figure is presentational, because the shipping rate is still resolved server-side at checkout, so the threshold in the drawer and the rate in the shipping profile have to move together.

Badges as scheduled rules, not markup

Product badges run off a rule set that matches on product and collection membership, with optional start and end dates, device targeting and a priority to break ties when several rules land on one card. Running a sale is a rule change, so it does not touch Liquid and cannot be lost in a theme update.

Sections re-render, pages do not

Collection facets for availability and price range, predictive search and the cart drawer all go through Shopify's section rendering API, so a filter change or an add-to-cart swaps one section's markup instead of a full navigation. Merchandising apps mount as theme app extensions served from Shopify's CDN, keeping their code out of the theme templates.
